this is NOT the order these paintings were painted in! Louis Wain did NOT start painting more abstractly the worse his schizophrenia got!
thing is: he didn’t date his paintings. these were all painted in random order, and then were put in this order because it looked interesting.
he even started abstract patterns, like the last few paintings, before he even “developed schizophrenia”! even later in life he produced some of his most conventional cat paintings.
it’s even theorized that he didn’t have schizophrenia at all, and he may have had dementia, or even aspergers (like me!)
everyone treats this myth like it’s a fact and even my friend’s psychology class was teaching people that this was what happened! people close to wain said that he was painting cats up until his death.
this myth is easily disproven with a quick google search.
